Nudging the Boulder: Personal Sovereignty and the Weight of History

In this emotional exchange, reptiliandude offers rare pastoral advice to DestinyAcension, who is struggling with overwhelming rage at the “ignorance” and decay within their country. The entity advises a strategy of subtle influence rather than direct confrontation: instead of standing in front of the “rolling boulder” of public idiocy and being crushed, one should run alongside it, offering gentle nudges to gradually shift its trajectory. He emphasizes that personal happiness stems from recognizing the boundary of one’s own power, noting that while we may affect others, we are not responsible for their actions.

The tone shifts as reptiliandude admits to a period of “melancholy,” questioning if his centuries of intervention have done more harm than good—a doubt that led to his decision to live his “final miles” in a human body to truly understand the “monkey mind.” Garbotalk and ACuriousHumanBeing serve as his emotional anchors, reminding him of his influence throughout history—from the Olmecs and Buddhist monks to the creation of a “refuge” for humanity to prepare for the end of quarantine. They argue that his efforts have not been in vain, painting a picture of a species that, despite being “stubborn and forgetful,” has been successfully nudged out of the mud toward a future of real-time cosmic interaction.

DestinyAcension: Hello glycon im wondering if you could offer some advice. I have been essentially studying this reddit in its entirety and as the days turn to months i see myself becoming increasingly enraged at my countrymen. Without the means to egress from this land im forced to deal with it. Why am i becoming so angry? It saddens me that i was once a peaceful individual now im almost consumed with rage at the ongoing situation in my country. So much as a comment made in ignorance makes my blood boil. I cant place exactly when this change in mindset occured. i feel almost inhuman as feelings of callousness and general cold heartedness plague every aspect of everyday life. I know its not your job but any help would be appreciated.

reptiliandude: I’m not much for giving advice, but I’ll try…

One of the secrets to personal happiness is understanding that there are some things that are within your power to change and other things that are simply outside your power to change.

I’m not talking about surrender or causal acceptance, but an understanding that you aren’t personally responsible to change the world and aren’t expected to.

If you know the truth about something be it political, scientific or even life truths which lend themselves over to what appears to be a common thread repeating itself— some people call this ‘karma’ or even ‘spirituality…’

By whatever means you perceive and respond or react to the life experience, when all is said and done, its your own.

It belongs to you and no one else.

We may affect other people with what we do and there may be a personal responsibility or a debt to those our actions have caused harm to…

But we aren’t responsible for what other people do.

If one can stop a crime of violence occurring, and if you can do it safely and not bring harm to yourself, all the better.

But it takes more than disarming someone or beating them down to knock sense into them.

Greater minds than yours and mine have tried and failed.

However there is a way to contribute to someone’s understanding using subtlety.

When dealing with stubborn people or prevailing opinion that is horribly wrong, it’s best not to get in front of it as it’s like a boulder rolling down a gentle slope right towards you.

It will roll right over you and crush you if you stand right in front of it.

If, however, you run alongside that boulder and gently nudge it a bit occasionally, it will start to change direction until it starts going ever so slightly uphill…. and then back slightly down and you can nudge it to an even keel along the side of the slope…

Then it eventually stops and you can hold it in place with one finger.

Bear this in mind as you see the idiocy inherent in this world around you.

Minds working to an end are a power and power can be used for evil or for good.

In the end, good is far more powerful.

Even if those who know how to wield its weaponry always seem to get off to a late start.

😉

DestinyAcension: Thank you glycon. I truly appreciate it. 🤝

garbotalk: You who have been nudging us for quite some time, can you elaborate on some of your successes, and conversely, some of your disappointments? In the hundreds of years you’ve interacted with us, surely we have changed.

reptiliandude: Right now, Hon…

I don’t really want to think about it.

I’ve been feeling a bit melancholic as of late and am thinking that most of my attempts at helping have in many ways done more harm than good.

It’s one of the reasons I decided to walk my final miles in your shoes.

ACuriousHumanBeing: What do you think of your attempts now, having existed as one of us, monkey mind and all?

Personally I think you’ve gotten better. Your much better at getting your point across and singing our songs. And your swords of offensive humor are ever better at cutting where they need to, though you may sometime go too far. But I also recognize your venting sometimes, and you can have the whole weight of the whole on your head, but you try.

Like, I think I’m a better person for having known you. You at least have that. 🙂

reptiliandude: Meh…

garbotalk: I imagine the Olmecs were first a high as they built pyramids and learned astronomy, farming and engineering, then a low with the sacrifices. But those sacrifices ended eventually once the conquistadors took over.

Your time in China with the Buddhist monks certainly was profound for you, especially when you received your thread. They worked their way out of extreme poverty and addiction and left feudalism behind to become a strong nation.

You influenced many leaders including Andrew Jackson, though the trail of tears depressed you, no doubt. I realize that our country has decayed of late which disappoints us all. Still, we may turn it around.

Your time on Earth has seen highs and lows, but in each encounter, you tried to elevate us. We are a stubborn and forgetful species, I know. Bit you’ve witnessed us dragging ourselves with your nudging (and others) out of the mud to create beautiful cities, amazing music, fearless space flight and unleashing the power of the stars.

Your studies in math and science led you to the Callibration Society. Your efforts with synthetics gave them new opportunities. Youve created a place here, a refuge for us to learn in and prepare for our future. Your efforts with us may free us and lead us into Ael opportunities to speak in real time.

All that’s really left to do is prepare us for the end of quarantine, prevent us blowing ourselves up, unmask our enemies and encourage us to answer the beacon so the Assembly can free us. Then you and I can high five in heaven!

I know, I know, our currency must be our own.

As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Happiness is not a goal…it’s a by-product of a life well lived.”

In film, Clarence, the angel said, “You see, George, you’ve really had a wonderful life. Don’t you see what a mistake it would be to throw it all away?”

Here’s hoping that in these last miles, you will carry on with a clarity of purpose that will invigorate and comfort you, and please the One who spread forth His hand.

I’m glad to know you.
